Proof of Identity and Foreign Status
Satisfy Two Tests: Identity and Non-US Status
You must provide a valid identity document to establish your identity and your connection to a foreign country (“foreign status”). Only a passport shows both.
Originals or Certified Copies from the Issuing Agency
We can certify your Identity and Foreign Status based on your original identity documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. We cannot use copies of identity documents that have notarized by a Notaris or third-party notary service. The IRS rules are rather strict.
We cannot accept scanned documents.
Are you applying as a Dependent?
You must also prove U.S. residency unless you are
- from Canada or Mexico or
- a dependent of U.S. military personnel stationed overseas.
If you don't have a passport (or don't want to use it), the IRS will accept two forms of identification from this list.
